COURIER FLIGHTS STEP BY STEP   |   THE COURIER LIST   |   LINKS

Flying as a freelance courier is a relatively simple process. The first step you can take is to call the company(ies) listed for the gateway city you live closest to. Tell them that you are calling about courier flights, and would like to find out which destinations and dates they have available. Also, ask if they maintain a list of individuals who are willing to fly at the last minute.

The following information may vary from company to company

  • After registering for the flight, the courier company will provide information regarding your travel arrangements. If the company's policy requires that you sign a contract, they will mail this to you, or they may have you sign the contract at the airport. They will also want to confirm that your documentation (passport, visa, etc.) is in order.
  • On the day of travel you will have to arrive at the airport a few hours before departure. You will be told exactly where to meet the courier company representative. He or she will take care of the paperwork, give you your ticket, and assist with check-in.
  • In case of any mix-up at the airport always have the telephone numbers for the courier company with you. You may also inquire at the ticket counter if you run into any problems.
  • The representative will give you arrival instructions. He will also tell you anything you need to know about the customs process. You will be given a small pouch containing the manifest for the courier company's shipment. The manifest lists the contents of the cargo and will stay with you during the flight. You will probably not even see the actual cargo that is being shipped.
  • On board the plane you will be treated as a standard passenger.
  • When you arrive at the destination, proceed through customs with your document pouch. You will once again meet a representative of the courier company, most likely in the baggage claim area. Once you turn the manifest envelope over to the representative, he will give you information about the return flight.
  • If you have courier responsibilities in both directions, the same procedures are followed for the return trip. The courier company may request that you are back in the departure city and make telephone contact within a certain time period prior to departure. Be prepared to pay a departure tax.
